‘Grim Sleeper’ Neighbors Look Back On Warning Signs, Red Flags
July 16, 2010
California (ChattahBox) – People who knew suspected serial killer Lonnie Franklin Jr. have been looking back on things he did and said, realizing that there were several red flags that pointed to him being responsible for the ‘Grim Sleeper’ killings. But hindsight is 20/20.
A report by the Huffington Post pointed to a number of signs of Franklin’s involvement in the murders of at least 10 young black women who worked as prostitutes, or used drugs.
First, there was his intense hatred of prostitutes, which he frequently expounded upon with people he knew. Next, were his assertions that the women who were murdered over the course of 22 years deserved it. He had more than a dozen arrests, including several for violent offenses, though he stayed out of prison. Franklin also commonly told people he knew of the violent and graphic sexual fantasies and experiences he had.
“He would have violent fantasies. He was putting the girls down … saying someone is going to kill these girls, saying they were going to end up dead,” former friend Lydia Kam said.
“I’m a little shook up by the experience. I’m wondering if we are too lenient…I should have made a better choice.”
Franklin is suspected of up to 30 more murders, one of which was a man police believe he killed after the victim discovered his place in the serial killings. He has not yet been charged with those crimes.
Police are being accused by the family members of known victims of failing in their investigations over the years. They believe that officers failed to take the case seriously because of the nature of the victim’s lifestyles.
