Jobless Can Exhale: Obama Signs Unemployment Extension Bill
July 22, 2010
(ChattahBox)—Finally, finally, finally, the long-term unemployed in our country can exhale, after weeks and months stressing over how the mortgage would be paid, how they could afford to put food on the table and gas in their automobiles, while keeping one step ahead of the repo man. President Obama signed the bill early this evening, extending unemployment benefits for an additional six-months.
President Obama released a statement condemning Republicans for blocking unemployment assistance for millions of Americans at a time of near double-digit unemployment.
“After a partisan minority used procedural tactics to block the authorization of this assistance three separate times over the past weeks, Americans who are fighting to find a good job and support their families will finally get the support they need,” Obama said.
Next on Obama’s agenda is a measure providing additional aid for small businesses and assistance to states to prevent the layoffs of teachers, police and firefighters.
“Small businesses are the engine of job growth, and measures to cut their taxes and make lending available should not be held hostage to partisan tactics like those that unconscionably held up unemployment insurance,” Obama said.
