Thousands of Soldiers Likely Buried In Wrong Plots at Arlington Cemetery

July 27, 2010

Texas (ChattahBox) – Officials for the U.S. Army and Congress are investigating a problem with the mishandling of graves in Arlington Cemetery, where the New York Post reports that thousands of soldiers could have been buried in the wrong graves.

So far, 211 graves have been found to possess discrepancies with the map of the cemetery, which an Army probe says shows a major mistake going back years.

“At the very essence here, you have waste. There may be fraud — we don’t know at this point,” Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-TX), who is helping lead a probe into the matter, said.

She also cited a serious case of lax management and the use of old paperwork instead of modernized digital files as definite culprits.

Two men involved, Superintendent John Metzler and Deputy Superintendent Thurman Higginbotham, were forced to resign, and have been called as witnesses in the matter.
