Fox News Doocy: Time to ‘Re-Examine’ 14th Amendment (Video)
August 4, 2010
(ChattahBox)—As if the discussion on repealing the citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment, couldn’t become more idiotic, Steve Doocy of Fox & Friends has weighed in and joined the crew of “Dred Scott” Republicans. Doocy an esteemed constitutional scholar–well not really, far from it, has proclaimed that the 14th Amendment needs to be “re-examined.” Why? We just can’t have brown babies being born in America and “suddenly the children are citizens.”
The Fox & Friends crew this morning, played a clip of Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), saying removing the natural birthright clause in the 14th Amendment is “an interesting thing to look at.” According to Coburn, “it was never the intent by our founders” that when you “have a child born here and you were here not as a resident, that your child would become a citizen.”
Doocy brought up a recent Washington Post article that reported on “birth tourism” agencies in China. Travel and medical care packages are offered to affluent expectant mothers, whom travel to the U.S. on tourist visas to give birth, providing their children with American citizenship and a coveted passport. After the child is born, they return to China.
Doocy called the practice “unseemly” and he called for birthright policies to be re-evaluated:
DOOCY: The Washington Post did an article not long ago, where it talked about a Chinese woman coming into this country through visas and some illegally–have a baby. And suddenly the children are citizens, and they go–’Hey you can’t get rid of me because my kid is an American citizen.’ And they do it for money. And it is a very unseemly business, and why not have a dialogue about changing it. Remember this wasn’t added until 1868 to the U.S. Constitution. Maybe it’s time to go ahead and re-examine it.”
The rights of citizenship to those born on American soil is well settled law, as interpreted by the U.S. Supreme Court, and it’s a foundation of our nation that makes America a place of freedom that draws others from around the globe. Now, a few right-wing bigots on an anti-immigration tear during election season, want to repeal part of our Constitution to score political points.
