Fox & Friends Carslon Asks Why Obama Can’t Plug Border ‘Holes’ in a ‘Few Days’ (Video)

August 9, 2010

(ChattahBox)—Gretchen Carlson, a former Miss America beauty queen and co-host of the mind-numbingly stupid Fox & Friends, asks why can’t President Obama just snap his fingers and plug all of those pesky “holes” on the Mexico border, as quickly as he issued an offshore drilling moratorium? Ordering a temporary halt on oil drilling in response to the Deepwater Horizon disaster and securing nearly 2000 miles of a meandering international border, is the exact same thing in Carlson’s view.

Carlson made her remarks during this morning’s episode of Fox & Friends, before providing an Arizona sheriff with yet another forum, to spew nativist anti-immigration fearmongering:

CARLSON: “Well, it only took the President a few days to shut down busy oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. So, why can’t he do the same for those holes along the border?”

Yes, why can’t our complicated immigration problems be solved in a few days, by plugging up a few holes?

According to right-wingers, such as Carlson, plugging all of the border “holes” to keep the Mexicans out would end our nation’s illegal immigration problem, despite the fact that the 2000 mile border is impossible to completely secure.

Answer: Obama can’t do it “in a few days” for the same reason G. W. Bush couldn’t do it in EIGHT FREAKING YEARS. It’s impossible to devise a border fence that we can afford to build, that can’t be bypassed by sufficiently determined people.

Of course, I suppose Carlson could fund an effort to pump Mexico full of mud and concrete. That worked in the Gulf, didn’t it?

    OMD:

Yes, no kidding. But the right-wing and the simpletons at Fox News reject the idea of comprehensive immigration reform, preferring instead to make believe our illegal immigration problem will take care of itself once we completely seal the border (which is impossible), ship all of the brown folks back where they came from and by denying citizenship to so-called “anchor babies.”

It really does become depressing, when you realize how much of our current political discourse is based on ignorance, fearmongering and bigotry.
