Nutty Birther Billboard Awaits Obama at Gulf Coast
August 14, 2010
(ChattahBox)–The birther conspiracy theory that President Obama is an illegal alien, is nuts, it’s crazy and it has been completely and thoroughly debunked, but it still persists. Why? Blame it partly on racism, xenophobia and fanatical adherents, such as WorldNetDaily founder Joseph Farah. And the right-wing anti-Obama smear machine of talk radio, extremist right-wing lawmakers and tea party groups, also keeps the kooky conspiracy theory alive. And WorldNetDaily, known as the fevered swamp for radical right-wing conspiracy theories is erecting one of its notorious birther billboards, asking “Where’s the Birth Certificate” to greet President Obama and his family, as they visit the Gulf Coast region this weekend. Nice, huh?
WorldNetDaily is very adept at monetizing its kooky conspiracy theories and apocalyptic fearmongering, by running fundraising campaigns to pay for the billboards, as well as selling right-wing merchandise from its Superstore. The online store sells birther T-shirts, bumper stickers and scary-sounding books with such titles, as “The Manchurian President.”
And Farah is offering a $10,000 reward for “persuasive evidence” proving the place of President Obama’s birth. But no evidence exists to satisfy Farah and his tin-foil-hat-wearing minions.
WorldNet Daily insists the question of Obama’s eligibility has not been answered, despite the fact that Obama’s birth certificate is available online and birth notices were printed in two Hawaiian newspapers at the time President Obama was born.
“Farah attributes widespread interest in the great “birth-certificate controversy” to the billboard campaign that, he believes, rekindled the debate about Obama’s constitutional eligibility for office. The campaign asks the simple but unanswered question, “Where’s the birth certificate?”‘
Farah can’t be looking very hard. President Obama’s birth certificate is right here.
Now, can we all forget about this nutty conspiracy theory?
Sighs–apparently not. As noted by Think Progress, a recent poll found that a shocking majority of Americans believe President Obama was not born in the United States.
“A recent CNN poll found that only 42 percent of Americans have absolutely no doubts that Obama was born in the U.S., while 29 percent say he “probably” was. Eleven percent claim Obama was definitely not born in the U.S. and another 16 percent say the president was probably not born in the country.”
This is all quite depressing.
