Professor Beck: Charles Darwin Invented ‘Modern-Day Racism’ (Video)
August 20, 2010
(ChattahBox)—The Christian right’s assault on science and Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution is nothing new. Creationists believe that rejecting science is a test of their faith, as they nonsensically assert that the earth is only 6,000 years old, and Jesus Christ romped with dinosaurs. Charles Darwin’s theory has been attacked for causing the Nazi Holocaust, eugenics and the spiritual decline in America. And believers in creationism, also frequently label Darwin as a racist. Glenn Beck fired up his creationist bona fides during last night’s Fox News program, calling Charles Darwin the “father” of modern racism. Now, if the conspiratorial Beck said this while riding a dinosaur, it would have been more entertaining.
Professor Beck has experience in calling people racists. He infamously attacked President Obama, our first black president, as a racist with a deep-seated hatred of white people. And as a result, hundreds of his sponsors fled. During the height of the BP oil disaster, Beck claimed Obama was racist against white CEOs.
Lately, when Beck is not connecting the dots on his blackboard, of his wild conspiracy theories and guilt by association attacks on Obama and progressives, he’s donning his professorial hat, as the founder of Beck University, to misinform his deluded audience and spew pseudo history.
And about Darwin’s alleged racism, his work, “Descent of Man,” has been widely misinterpreted, based on his 19th century discussions of whether all races of man were of the same species.
Many 19th century thinkers of the day, especial from the South, rejected the idea that white men were of the same “species” as African-Americans, or as they put it “savages.”
“The question whether mankind consists of one or several species has of late years been much agitated by anthropologists, who are divided into two schools of monogenists and polygenists. Those who do not admit the principle of evolution, must look at species either as separate creations or as in some manner distinct entities; and they must decide what forms to rank as species by the analogy of other organic beings which are commonly thus received.”
Darwin concluded that differences between people of different races were merely superficial, and that all human beings were of the same species.
“…when the principle of evolution is generally accepted, as it surely will be before long, the dispute between the monogenists and the polygenists will die a silent and unobserved death.”
And there is this observation about Darwin as a man:
“While many of his contemporaries approved of slavery, Darwin did not. He came from a family of ardent abolitionists, and he was revolted by what he saw in slave countries ‘It makes one’s blood boil, yet heart tremble, to think that we Englishmen and our American descendants, with their boastful cry of liberty, have been and are so guilty.’”
Professor Beck and his right-wing pseudo history, is just plain wrong. Shocking huh?
