Muslim Born Miss USA Says Park51 ‘Shouldn’t Be So Close’ to Ground Zero

August 21, 2010

(ChattahBox)–Our first Muslim-born Miss USA Rima Fakih, weighed in on the Park51 Islamic Center this week, surprisingly in favor of moving it away from Lower Manhattan. The proposed site is two blocks away from Ground Zero in a former Burlington Coat Factory building, but it has become a political hot button issue that has set off a wave of anti-Islam fervor in the United States. Rima Fakih, 24, said in her statement, although she agrees with President Obama’s remarks on religious freedom, she still feels the Islamic center would be too close to the site of the terrorists attacks on 9/11.

“I totally agree with President Obama with the statement on Constitutional rights of freedom of religion,” Fakih told “Inside Edition.”

Fakih made her remarks while preparing for the Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas.

“Fakih, who was born in Lebanon and raised in Michigan, is one of the 83 contestants competing in the pageant, which will be broadcast Monday night.”

‘”I also agree that it shouldn’t be so close to the World Trade Center. We should be more concerned with the tragedy than religion,” added Fakih.”

The proposed Park51 Islamic community center, would feature a swimming pool, gymnasium and a place of worship.
