Blue Dog Jokester Bobby Bright: Hopes for Pelosi to ‘Get Sick and Die’
August 26, 2010
(ChattahBox)—Speculating in a joking manner on the imminent death of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), plays well with the good ol’ boys in Montgomery, Alabama, as Rep. Bobby Bright (D-AL) recently discovered. A member of the Blue Dog Coalition and one of the most conservative Democrats in Congress, quipped to a roomful of constituents that Pelosi could do him a big favor and become seriously ill and die, thereby relieving him from the pressure to vote for her. His ill-advised remarks about Pelosi’s early demise drew laughter. And now Bright is in the position of having to explain, why a Democratic freshman member of Congress would wish for the death of his House Leader.
Nancy Pelosi, the first female Speaker of the House and one of the most powerful and accomplished Speakers in history, is often demonized by Republicans. And Bright has taken heat from his conservative district for voting for her. The upcoming mid-terms promise to be difficult for Democratic incumbents in conservative districts. And Bright is facing a strong Republican challenger for his seat.
But that’s no excuse for his disrespectful behavior towards his own Democratic Speaker of the House.
Bright made his remarks during a recent Chamber of Commerce event:
“Bright, who is is in his first year in Congress and facing a battle against Montgomery City Councilwoman Martha Roby this fall, joked that Pelosi might lose her own election, decide not to run for the speaker’s job or otherwise not be available.”
“He suggested, jokingly he insisted to his audience, that Pelosi could fall ill and die in coming months. That remark drew laughter from the crowd.”
Greg Sargent obtained Bright’s exact quote. “Let’s wait until that comes up,” Bright said, then giving a long list of reasons why Pelosi might not run for Speaker of the House. “Heck, she might even get sick and die.”
Speaker Pelosi is the mother of five grown children and grandmother to seven grandchildren, married to her husband Paul Pelosi for nearly fifty-years.
Really, Rep. Bright–you really wish an agonizing death on a mother and grandmother, so you can avoid making a difficult vote at work?
Bright was one of only four Democrats to vote against a bill that would provide health care to sick and dying 9/11 responders.
With Democrats like this…
