‘Rodeo Clown’ Beck, White Teapartiers to ‘Reclaim’ Civil Rights Movement
August 28, 2010
(ChattahBox)–Glenn Beck, the self-described “rodeo clown” and Fox News’ resident hatemonger and conspiracy-theorist-in-chief, is also part carnival huckster with delusions of becoming a televangelist. This Messianic freak, who attacked Barack Obama, our first Black president, as a “racist,” harboring “a deep-seated hatred of white people,” is taking his carnival act on the road today to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, on the same date and place that the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous and inspiring “I have a Dream Speech.” Beck and his right-wing tea party minions, a group of mostly white middle-age and middle-class disaffected Republicans, are gathering on the grounds of the Lincoln Memorial, to “reclaim” the civil rights movement and to restore honor to America. Restore it to what and from what? Restore and reclaim it from who? This is more of the same coded racial nonsense heard from teapartiers, since the election of our first black president: “We want our country back.” Back from who? Why, that black Democratic socialist in our White House, of course.
Leading up to his Restoring Honor rally, Glenn Beck went full on Messiah, talking of the “American miracle” he predicted would happen during his event, saying it was “divine providence” that his rally was scheduled on the 47th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s transcendent speech. And continuing with his self-aggrandizing hyperbole, the Fox News pundit, compared himself to Martin Luther King, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. He predicted his Restoring Honor rally, filled with tea party malcontents, known for their racist behavior, “will be remembered in American history as the turning point,” much like the first Moon landing and the first flight by the Wright Brothers.
Beck plans to “reclaim” the civil rights movement from black Americans and hand it over to white Americans, whose ancestors may have been former slave owners, saying “we pick up Martin Luther King’s dream that has been distorted and lost.” We “will reclaim the civil rights moment. We will take that movement, because we were the people that did it in the first place,” Beck said.
Yes, Beck’s megalomania is ludicrous, but tell that to his Fox News tea party followers, whom truly believe in his distorted revisionist history lessons and kooky conspiracy theories about President Obama and progressives.
When the Beckapalooza shindig wraps up later today, this writer will have more to say, but for now, the words written today, by The New York Times’ Bob Herbert perfectly encapsulates the utter sliminess of Beck’s Restoring Honor rally. Of Beck the man, Herbert, says “He makes you want to take a shower.” No truer words have been written.
Herbert also delves into Beck’s purposeful disrespect to the memory of Martin Luther King’s legacy, from a man who called our first black president a “racist” and who compared the Obama administration, to “The Planet of the Apes.” Herbert paints Beck’s rally “cynical,” while also pointing out Beck’s lack of shame:
The climax, of course, was Dr. King’s transcendent “I Have a Dream” speech. Jerald Podair, a professor of American studies at Lawrence University in Wisconsin, has called Aug. 28, 1963, “the most important single day in civil rights history.” This is the historical legacy that Glenn Beck, a small man with a mean message, has chosen to tread upon with his cynical rally on Saturday at that very same Lincoln Memorial.
Beck is a provocateur who likes to play with matches in the tinderbox of racial and ethnic confrontation. He seems oblivious to the real danger of his execrable behavior. He famously described President Obama as a man “who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture.” [...]
Facts and reality mean nothing to Beck. And there is no road too low for him to slither upon. [...]
He makes you want to take a shower.
In Beck’s view, President Obama is driven by a desire to settle “old racial scores” and his ultimate goal is “reparations” for black Americans. Abe Lincoln and Dr. King could only look on aghast at this clown.
Herbert also addresses the former half-governor Sarah Palin’s appearance at Beck’s rally, to “reclaim” the civil rights movement. Palin a deeply divisive and ignorant woman, recently called on Dr. Laura Schlessinger to “reload,” and “cast off” her “shackles,” after the now-former talk radio host bullied a black caller, unleashing a hateful on-air racist rant, in which she screeched the N-word 11 times.
Restoring Honor? Beck has none.
