James Lee Shot Dead, No ‘Active’ Bombs Found in Discovery Building
September 2, 2010
(ChattahBox)—James Ray Lee was shot dead by SWAT officers, after nearly a four-hour standoff with police at the Discovery Chanel headquarters in Silver Springs, MD yesterday afternoon. Lee, known to Discovery employees as a frequent protester, arrested two-years ago for demonstrating outside of the building, stormed into the lobby of the building, waving a handgun, with bombs strapped to his body, taking three hostages. Lee posted a bizarre manifesto on his website Save the Planet Protest, demanding that Discovery change its programming to highlight the dangers of overpopulation, particularly opposing the “birth of any more parasitic human infants.”
According to MSNBC’s report, the order was given to shoot Lee when it appeared he was threatening one of the hostages.
At least one device on the man’s body went off when he was shot inside the building in suburban Washington, D.C., Montgomery County police Chief Thomas Manger said. Police had been trying to determine whether two boxes and two backpacks the gunman had also contained explosives.
Manger said SWAT officers shot the gunman about 4:50 p.m. EDT because officials “believed the hostages were in danger.” The hostages — two Discovery Communications employees and a security guard — were unhurt after the four-hour standoff.
After Lee was shot, bomb squads canvassed the building searching for any explosive devices, but found no “active devices.”
NBC News became directly involved in the harrowing hostage situation, when one of its producers phoned the Discovery Channel and Lee answered the phone, telling the producer he had bombs. “I have a gun and I have a bomb. … I have several bombs strapped to my body ready to go off,” said Lee.
Lee’s manifesto railed against “filthy” human beings, “anchor babies,” war and overpopulation.
“Focus must be given on how people can live WITHOUT giving birth to more filthy human children since those new additions continue pollution and are pollution. A game show format contest would be in order. Perhaps also forums of leading scientists who understand and agree with the Malthus-Darwin science and the problem of human overpopulation,” wrote Lee on his website.
Lee also ranted about saving animals, instead of humans. “Froggies” were given more importance than humans.
“Nothing is more important than saving … the Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels. The humans? The planet does not need humans.”
