NY Islamic Center Imam: Palin’s Opposition ‘Disingenuous’ Exploitation

September 13, 2010

(ChattahBox Political News)—Sarah Palin is exploiting the controversy surrounding the proposed building of the Park51 center in Lower Manhattan for cheap political gain, says the Imam spearheading the Islamic culteral center. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, says Palin’s calls to “refudiate” the center, slamming it as a “stab in the heart and a “provocation” are “disingenuous.”

Imam Rauf made his remarks during an interview with ABC’s Christiane Amanpour, host of “This Week.” He pointed out that the issue was being exploited for political gain during an election season, by “certain politicians.”

The Hill Newspaper Reports:

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf told ABC’s “This Week” that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s assertion that that mosque was an unnecessary provocation was “disingenuous.”

“The discourse has been hijacked by radicals on both sides,” he said, adding that protesters in the U.S. and protests in the Muslim world “feed off each other.”

Rauf dismissed the assertions made by Fox News contributors and right-wing politicians that he was issuing a “threat” to Americans, by correctly pointing out that moving the center amid such anti-Muslim vitriol might spark a reaction from the radical elements of Islam.

“It is an extremely important consideration,” he said. The imam said that he wasn’t making any such threats, but that he is “a man of peace.”

On Monday, Imam Rauf, while speaking before Speaking the Council on Foreign Relations, pledged he would find a solution to the controversy surrounding the building of an Islamic culteral center two and a half blocks from ground Zero.

“Everything is on the table,” he said. “We really are focused on solving it” in a way that will be best for everyone concerned, he added. “I give you my pledge.”
