Tea Party Leader: Obama Slave Whip Float Harmless ‘Skit’ (Video)
September 15, 2010
(ChattahBox Political News)— No racism here folks, no siree. A leader of a tea party group in Washington State, denies that his group’s parade float plays on offensive racial stereotypes. The parade float featured a man wearing a President Obama costume, horsewhipping a white teen “slave” boy, wearing a “Future Tax Payer” T-shirt. Kirk Groenig, president of the tea party group, “Remember Us We The People,” defends the float, as a harmless “skit” to draw attention to the perceived runaway spending of the Obama administration. But many parade goers were offended, and called the slave “skit” racist and disrespectful to the presidency. Groenig chalked up the controversy to political correctness and tea party discrimination, muttering “this is just what tea party people put up with.” Yes, Kirk, the life of a teabagger patriot is so hard.
Groenig and his merry band of teapartiers entered their float in the Sportsmans’ Days Parade in Naches, a speck of a town with a population of just 643 and nearly 90 percent white, according to the 2000 census.
Local members of the Tea Party sponsored a float, decorated to look like a Radio Flyer wagon, pulled behind a truck. In that truck a number of people sat holding signs that read everything from “Obama Care” and “Healthcare Take Over” to “Wasted Tax Money.”
But the thing that got people upset was a man in shirt and tie wearing a mask of President Barack Obama. In one hand he held a sign that read “Hey Kids! Thanks for paying out (sic) debt!” In the other hand he held a horse riding crop which he snapped at a young teen in front of him pretending to pull the wagon by the handle wearing a shirt that read “Future Tax Payer.”
The tea party members sitting in the float could be heard shouting, “We’re having a party with your money.”
Members of the Lions Club sponsoring the event, received a number of complaints over the racial overtones of the questionable message of the teapartiers. But Groenig remains resolute, insisting the float was not racist at all.
“When they don’t like your message, they try to deem you as racist, that’s really unfortunate,” Groenig said.
When it was pointed out to Groenig, that at a minimum, the float was in bad taste, he defended the depiction of a slave being whipped, by our first black president, as a helpful skit to teach folks about deficit spending.
“We’re passing that debt to our children and grandchildren, and some of them don’t even have jobs yet,” Groenig said. [...]
“If people think that it went a little too far, maybe, but remember it’s a skit,” Groenig said.
The misunderstood tea party leader had plans to also enter his slave “skit” float in another parade, but with all of the controversy he may reconsider.
“We’ll probably still enter, but this is just what tea party people put up with,” he said.
Yes, race-baiting teabaggers are just misunderstood patriots.
