Acid Attack Story Made Up, Police Say

September 16, 2010

Washington (ChattahBox Crime News) – The woman who was admitted to the hospital with severe acid burns claiming that a random woman attacked her with a substance in a Starbucks has admitted that she lied.

Bethany Storro claimed that while she was in a Starbucks a random African American woman came up to her and said, “Hey, pretty girl…wanna drink this?” before splashing a liquid from a cup into her face that turned out to be acid.

The police spent hundreds of man hours in an attempt to find the assailant, and the community sent condolences and donations from all over the state. The story got national attention when it was picked up by major media circuits, and further support and donations came from those outside of Washington.

She has now admitted that she was lying, and that she inflicted the injuries on herself. Police have taken her statement, though they say they are not clear on her motive, nor her reasons to describing the assailant so clearly. A composite sketch had been issued based on her description.

Police have not yet decided if she will be charged.
