September 19, 2010
(ChattahBox US News) – Law enforcement agencies are searching for 13 alleged members of a cult — five adults and eight of their children, missing in southern California after leaving behind notes saying they are going to meet Jesus and dead relatives, authorities said. The missing cult members according to CNN, are from Palmdale in northern Los Angeles County, consist of 3 immigrant families from El Salvador including 3 sisters. The leader of the group, Reyna Marisol Chicas aged 32, is among those that are missing. Notes, documents and property deeds were left behind with a husband of one of the cult members and family members then reported them missing.A police spokesman described some of the letters as saying goodbye to family members and said, “They were awaiting the rapture or some other catastrophic event.” They are traveling in three vehicles – a 2004 Nissan Quest, a 1995 Mercury Villager and a remodeled Toyota Tundra, said Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Police helicopters are scanning a nearby area called Antelope Valley, mentioned in some of the letters left behind. They’re also searching Vasquez Rocks, another wilderness spot where authorities believe the group had planned to go six months ago to wait then for the apocalypse or other catastrophic event. That previous trip was called off after a cult member told relatives about their plans.
Update: The whole drama seems to have been overblown. the group was found hours later by a neighborhood patrol on Sunday, praying outside a high school in Palmdale for an end to school violence and sexual immorality.
“No crime has been committed and there are no charges pending,” said Captain Mike Parker of Palmdale sheriff’s station, where the group was taken for “discussions about their future intentions”.
