Liberals Respond to Biden’s ‘Stop Whining’ Scolding: Suck It!
September 28, 2010
(ChattahBox Political News)—-The beleaguered Democratic base, tired and apathetic from unemployment, diminished liberal expectations and mean insane Republicans, will now march on Washington with their new rallying cry courtesy of Vice President Joe Biden. What is it? Buck up and “stop whining” already. Yeah, well, that isn’t quite the inspirational message liberals were looking for. The White House’s latest incident of “hippie punching” is predictably, not being well received with the base. Markos Moulitsas of the progressive blog the Daily Kos, blasted Biden’s remarks, calling them “idiotic,” charging the Obama administration with seeking a scapegoat for its failure to deliver real change, saying “they are insulting people.” Oh boy. With just five-weeks to go before the November mid-terms, in which Republicans are expected to make big gains, bashing the liberal base once again, is not the ticket to eliminating Democratic voter apathy.
Biden made his remarks during an appearance at a New Hampshire fundraiser on Monday, for Democratic senatorial and congressional candidates.
Democrats need to “remind our base constituency to stop whining and get out there and look at the alternatives,” he said. “This president has done an incredible job. He’s kept his promises.”
Biden pointed out that liberals are unfairly expecting the sun, the moon and the stars. President Obama is not a deity with super powers, he reminded voters.
“Don’t compare me to the Almighty. Compare me to the alternative,” said Biden.
Biden added that he understands the frustration with the slow pace of some reforms demanded by progressives, but said the situation would be much worse, if Republicans regain power in Congress.
“They should be able to be angry with us,” he said. “If we make this a referendum on the current state of affairs, we lose, and so that’s why we’ve got to make this a choice.”
He’s right of course, but liberals are angry and weary from watching real progressive reforms become watered down by Blue Dogs, Republicans and political realities.
And this latest slam at the liberal base, comes close on the heels of White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs’ attack on the “professional left,” saying progressives would not be satisfied until we have “Canadian healthcare and we’ve eliminated the Pentagon.”
“I hear these people saying he’s like George Bush. Those people ought to be drug tested,” added Gibbs. “I mean, it’s crazy.”
President Obama has been trying in a less antagonistic way, of rallying the base for the November elections, recognizing there exists a wide enthusiasm gap between likely Republican and Democratic voters. Last week, the President warned Democrats what was at stake.
Folks wake up! This is not some academic exercise. As Joe Biden put it, Don’t compare us to the Almighty, compare us to the alternative,” Obama said.
And President Obama is also right. If the GOP regains power, they will push for a rollback of healthcare and Wall Street reforms, as well as the dismantling of entitlements, including Social Security and Medicare. The new crop of Republican very far right, teapartiers will also try and take the country back to the 19th century, when greedy robber barons rule the day.
And there is no question, President Obama has a slew of legislative achievements under his belt in just two years through his first term; an historic achievement for any presidency in recent memory.
The liberal base knows all of this. They just want a little respect, not scolding.
Meanwhile, Progressive Change Campaign Committee activist Adam Green, is being credited with the most widely quoted Biden put down of the day.
“The ‘professional left’ is busting our butt to mobilize progressive voters in 2010, picking up the ball that this White House dropped when they refused to fight for the overwhelmingly popular public option, refused to break up the big banks, and demobilized Obama voters who expected this president to at least fight for big change,” said Green.
The PCCC co-founder, would like to see some public scolding of annoying and obstructionist centrist Democrats and spineless Blue Dogs, such as Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE), before liberals are targeted.
“When Vice President Biden tells Joe Lieberman to ’stop whining’ about the public option, and tells Ben Nelson to ’stop whining’ about voting on a middle-class tax cut that benefits 98 percent of Americans, he’ll have some credibility on the whining front,” added Green.
So, take that Joe. Right back atcha.
