Rutgers Student Charged With Secretly Taping Sex of a Student Who Commited Suicide
September 29, 2010
New Jersey (ChattahBox Crime News) – Two Rutgers University students have been charged with privacy violations after they taped another student having sex and broadcast it over the internet. The student who was taped is now believed to have committed suicide as a result.
On September 19, Dharun Ravi posted a message on his Twitter: “Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into Molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.”
In actuality, he had taped an entire sexual encounter between Tyler Clementi and an unknown male. ‘Molly’ is Molly Wei, who has also been charged with invasion of privacy.
Ravi then attempted to gain footage again three days later, but it is not known if he was successful. The act was reported and an investigation into the matter was opened. But it took a tragic turn.
Last week, an unnamed man committed suicide by jumping off of the George Washington Bridge. It has now been announced that the man may have been 18-year-old Clementi, as his car was found abandoned nearby with his cellphone and laptop inside.
Ravi and Wei are facing up to five years behind bars for the alleged crime.
