Rick Sanchez: ‘Bigot’ Jon Stewart Just Like CNN’s Jews

October 1, 2010

(ChattahBox Political News)— Oy! CNN’s Rick Sanchez’ radio interview with Pete Dominick is filled with racial resentment towards “elite, Northeast establishment liberals” in general and Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart in particular. Sanchez, a first-generation Cuban American railed against Jon Stewart’s constant mocking of his intelligence on the Daily Show, saying “…I think Jon Stewart’s a bigot,” adding “He can’t relate to a guy like me.” “I am a complex human being, I’m not some moron to be…,” said Sanchez. And later in the interview, he rejected the idea that Stewart who is Jewish, is as much as an oppressed minority as Hispanics. Sanchez, said “… I’m telling you that everybody who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart, and a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart. Not good Sanchez, not good. Oy!

Rick Shanchez, host of “Rick’s List,” is known for his occasional on-air flubs. And Stewart, including other pundits, enjoy mocking the CNN’s host brain power. In his early reporting days, he once subjected himself to a Taser on air. And that piece of tape has become a favorite comic go-to for Stewart.

So, it’s understandable that Sanchez would be somewhat resentful towards Stewart’s treatment of him as a favorite punching bag, but yesterday’s rant against Liberal elite Jews, while perpetuating the derogatory stereotype that Jews control the media, was beyond the pale.

Below are snippets of Sanchez’s comments and audio.

“First, Sanchez started out expressing an anecdote from his own experience, when someone who was “top brass” at CNN told Sanchez to his face that he saw Sanchez as “more as John Quiñones,” referring to the Hispanic ABC News reporter. Sanchez’s example was an illustration that the problem of racism in the media business goes further than many expect, enveloping “not just the Right,” but also “elite, Northeast establishment liberals” that “deep down, when they look at a guy like me, they see a guy automatically who belongs in the second tier, and not the top tier.”

“That’s when Sanchez really let his feelings loose: “I think to some extent Jon Stewart and [Stephen] Colbert are the same way. I think Jon Stewart’s a bigot.”‘

When asked, “How is he a bigot?” Sanchez portrayed Stewart as coming from a comfortable privileged family, unlike his poor upbringing.

“I think he looks at the world through, his mom, who was a school teacher, and his dad, who was a physicist or something like that. Great, I’m so happy that he grew up in a suburban middle class New Jersey home with everything you could ever imagine.”

Later, when pressed, Sanchez backed off of the word bigot and called Stewart “prejudiced,” instead.

“If I did just sit there and read the teleprompter every day, Jon Stewart would never say a word about me. He’d say I’m a good Hispanic anchor, “Way to go, you’ve done a good job, stay right there.” … I am a complex human being, I’m not some moron to be…”

When asked if he thought Jews, as a repressed minority, would certainly understand his upbringing, as a poor Cuban kid from Miami, Sanchez rejected the idea that Jews have trouble getting jobs, as some Hispanics do. And he took aim at his own network.

“Yeah,” Sanchez snickered sarcastically at the idea that Jews are as much minorities as Latinos in the US.

“Very powerless people… [snickers] He’s such a minority, I mean, you know [sarcastically]… Please, what are you kidding? … I’m telling you that everybody who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart, and a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart, and to imply that somehow they — the people in this country who are Jewish — are an oppressed minority? Yeah. [sarcastically]”

Just mind-blowing. Talking Points Memo contacted CNN for a comment on Rick Sanchez’s criticisms. The cable network, said an official comment on the flap would be forthcoming later in the day.

It’s hard to see how Sanchez would still have a job after today.

(Update: No official statement from either CNN or Rick Sanchez yet, but Sanchez’s Rick List is now on and no sign or mention of him. Co-host Brooke Baldwin is hosting the show by herself. Not a good sign.

Stewart a bigot? I don’t know if he walks like a duck, but he sure quacks like one.
