Temptest in a Teacup: Joe Miller, Palin Email Slugfest
October 6, 2010
(ChattahBox Political News)—There is trouble in Wasilla between Joe Miller’s senatorial campaign and the Palins, particularly Todd Palin. Todd is peeved that the fringe tea party candidate didn’t enthusiastically endorse his wife Sarah for president, when asked on Fox News last month. Since the Palins excel at nursing petty resentments and perceived slights, the result is a very public rift, with the release of Todd’s angry emails supposedly by the Miller camp to Jeanne Devon of Mudflats, an anti-Palin liberal blogger. And in retaliation for his betrayal, Sarah Palin is now refusing to say nice things about Miller on her Facebook. Palin’s stance is “I made you, now I’m going to break you.” We have the makings here, of a real tea party tempest in a teacup that’s serving as schadenfreude-like fodder for progressive bloggers. At the same time, the fact that the Palins are so furious over the lack of an endorsement, has raised speculation anew that Sarah Palin is definitely planning to make a 2012 presidential run.
Joe Miller, an extremist “tenther” candidate who believes Social Security, Medicare, unemployment benefits and the federal minimum wage are unconstitutional, made his non-endorsement remarks during an appearance on “Your World with Neil Cavuto.” When asked by Cavuto if he would support Palin for president, Miller hedged, by responding “there are a number of great candidates out there.”
When Cavuto pressed Miller, asking if there was a quid pro quo deal made with Palin in return for her endorsement, he responded, “Oh, no no no there has never been a conservation like that ever.” Miller went on to praise Palin for her contribution to the country, adding “but I don’t make deals.”
The Palins thought differently. And soon after Miller’s remarks, Todd fired off an angry email addressed to both Miller and attorney Tim Crawford, the treasurer of SarahPAC, taking Miller to task for his non-endorsement and informing Miller that he was off the Palin’s Christmas card list.
“Hold off on any letter for Joe. Sarah put her ass on the line for Joe and yet he can’t answer a simple question “is Sarah Palin Qualified to be President”. I DON’T KNOW IF SHE IS.”
“Joe, please explain how this endorsement stuff works, is it to be completely one sided.” Sarah spent all morning working on a Face Book post for Joe. She won’t use it, not now. Put yourself in her shoe’s Joe for one day.”
Jeanne Devon of Mudflats reports “Though the exact contents of the Facebook post and the previously mentioned letter are not clear, it is obvious that the Palins did not, at the time of the email, intend to put any more political muscle behind Miller’s candidacy, and were specifically withholding support they had intended to give in retribution for Miller’s failure to support Palin’s presidential aspirations.
Miller forwarded Todd’s email, after making his own notation.
“Miller reacted three days later when he forwarded the email he’d received from Todd Palin, and added a message of his own. Miller’s email was sent to his spokesman Randy DeSoto, campaign manager Robert Campbell, political advisor Walter Campbell, and a staffer. Miller stated that he had just found the email from Palin in his inbox, and noted, “This is what we’re dealing with. Note the date and the complete misconstruction of what I said. Holy cow.”‘
Both emails somehow ended up in Devon’s hands. Palin’s camp is speculating that treacherous Huckabee supporters on Miller’s staff delivered the emails to Mudflats.
Whatever the case, there’s nothing like a nice cup of tea party schadenfreude in the morning.
