GOP being financed by foreign Corporations?
October 11, 2010
(ChattahBox US News) – At a rally in Northern Philadelphia, President Obama called on thousands of supporters to resist the attempts by foreign donors to the GOP to “hijack your agenda.”
The President is referring to possibility that advertising being done on behalf of the Republican Party was being financed by foreign corporations. As reported in the New York Times, the US Chamber of Commerce is refusing to disclose where the funds for their current advertisements come from.
Democrats have their work cut out for them this election cycle. Historically the sitting administration during a mid-term election loses seats. Add to that the miserable economy inherited by President Obama and the obstructionist efforts by the Republicans and what you have is a serious headwind for the upcoming election.
Due to a recent Supreme Court decision Corporations can spend at will and remain anonymous. Without the requirement to disclose the origin of advertising funds even foreign Corporations can now lobby on behalf of candidates. This raises the question: “Do we want nations like Saudi Arabia being able to influence our elections?”
In response to the serious allegations raised by the President, the Chamber of Commerce sent out Karl Rove, no stranger to controversy himself, to argue against disclosure.
The Republican Party has a reputation of catering to the interests of Corporations as it is; now they can do so without the public knowing which Corporations are expressing interest in America’s elections and where these Corporation come from. Even though they hold a minority in terms of actual numbers of voters, the Republicans can use these funds to help overwhelm the opposition. The concern is that special interest and now foreign nationals will be able to directly influence the policy of the United States through favor gained during elections.
President Obama has two more rallies scheduled to try and excite voters to combat the Corporate influence. The President believes, as does many watching this election, that this new ability of Big Business to frame the argument could seriously affect the will of the people. According to President Obama, “Now that’s not just a threat to Democrats, that’s a threat to our democracy.”
