Do Murdoch’s News Corp. Donations to Republicans Threaten Our Democracy?
October 16, 2010
(ChattahBox Political News)—An IRS filing by the Republican Governors Association revealed that News Corp., Fox News’ parent company, donated another 250,000 to the group on top of the already disclosed $ 1 million. The eye-opening million dollar donations made by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. to the Republican Governors Association and the right-wing multinational business group, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce are unprecedented for a news organization. The controversial and troubling donations led observers to wonder, What other undisclosed partisan donations has News Corp made in an attempt to sway the results of an American national election? He’s not saying. When angry shareholders demanded that News Corp. disclose additional donations, Murdoch hedged. When asked to defend the use of shareholder’s money to support the Republican Party, Murdoch responded the “unusual” donations are “in the interest of the country and of all the shareholders … that there be a fair amount of change in Washington.” In other words, Rupert Murdoch is using his unlimited corporate bank account and his right-wing media empire, including Fox News, The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post to spread an anti-Obama and right-wing propaganda message supporting big business and the outsourcing of American jobs. This attack on our Democracy and the middle class by a news organization is unprecedented.
Think Progress reports that in addition to Murdoch’s generous contributions to help elect Republican governors the Koch brothers, who have funded the tea party, also donated a nice chunk of change.
“This evening, IRS disclosures reveal that News Corporation gave another check, time for $250,000, bringing his total donation amount to $1,250,000. Other donors include Bill Koch, who donated $100,000, Swift Boat-funder Bob Perry, who gave $3.5 million, and right-wing casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson, who gave $1 million to the Republican campaign group.”
To date, Fox News’ parent company has donated $1.25 million to the RGA this year alone. When asked by Politico about the unusually large donation, Murdoch said the donation had nothing to do with News Corp. or Fox News, because he made the donation based on his friendship with Ohio Republican gubernatorial candidate and former Fox News host John Kasich.
Murdoch’s comment admitting he used company funds to support the Republican campaign of a friend raised eyebrows with shareholders. When asked about his bizarre admission during Friday’s shareholder’s meeting, he tried to walk it back, saying, it was “a foolish throwaway line.”
Murdoch did not disclose the additional $250,000 contribution to the RGA during Friday’s shareholder’s meeting.
John Kasich has also benefited from Fox News’ blatant electioneering and in-kind political contributions. He has made nine appearances on Fox News since he announced his candidacy. During those appearances, News Corp.’s whopping $1.25 million donation to the RGA has not been disclosed.
Watch a recent appearance on Fox News’ Hannity, wherein Kasich bashes President Obama and announces the name of his website, so viewers can send him money.
