October 18, 2010
(ChattahBox US News) – Four men caught in an FBI sting operation were convicted in federal court in Manhattan of plotting to blow up synagogues and fire missiles at military airplanes in New York City, after an eight-day jury deliberation. Onta Williams, Laguerre Payen, James Cromitie, and David Williams IV all from Newburgh, New York, were arrested in the Bronx in 2009, after planting fake bombs they were given by an FBI informant posing as a terrorist. The undercover informant also gave the group Stinger missile tubes, which the men planned to fire at military transport planes at Stewart International Airport. The defense argued that the men were victims of entrapment and that the agent pushed them to commit crimes they wouldn’t have otherwise. The four men were found guilty on seven of the eights counts against them, including conspiracy and attempts to use and acquire weapons of mass destruction and anti-aircraft missiles. Cromitie the ring leader and Williams were also found guilty of attempting to kill officers and employees of the United States. Each of the seven charges the men were found guilty on carry a maximum term of life in prison. Sentencing is not scheduled until March.
