Geithner Could Be ‘Fall Guy’ Following Throng of Democratic Losses This Week

November 4, 2010

(ChattahBox U.S. News) – If the White House wants to show the country that it takes responsibility for losing the House of Representatives this past Tuesday, President Obama could shake things up among his staff—and one likely candidate to pack his bags could be Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, CNBC’s John Carney opines.

The Democratic party may put pressure on Obama to show the country that he is changing direction with his administration, and because most voters pointed to the economy as the country’s biggest problem (with 40 percent noting that the economy worsened under Obama’s presidency), “Geither is a clear candidate to play the fall guy,” CNBC reports.

Because Geithner does not have the strong constituency within the Democratic party that some of the other top Obama administration officials have, he likely won’t find many people on Capitol Hill that fight to keep him in his position, further increasing the likelihood that he will be dismissed, CNBC says.
