Dem Patty Murray, ‘Mom in Tennis Shoes’ Declared Winner
November 5, 2010
(ChattahBox Political News)— After an anxious couple of days waiting for all the ballots to be counted, Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) was finally declared the winner last night of her race to serve a fourth term. This means the Democratic losses in the senate will remain at six seats. Murray’s Republican opponent Dino Rossi conceded last night, after the returns indicated he had no chance of winning even with a number of uncounted ballots still remaining.
This race was a tight one, with polls showing Murray with a razor thin edge over Murray throughout the campaign, but in the end she pulled off a convincing victory over Rossi.
DSCC chairman Bob Menendez released a statement, pointing out the hurdles Murray was forced to overcome with outside money flooding the state.
“National Republicans and special interest third party groups poured millions of dollars into this race … [T]he people of Washington are lucky to have this mom in tennis shoes on their side.”
Rossi released a statement acknowledging that his conservative message didn’t resonate with enough voters.
“That was a message that found a very receptive audience all across this state, though not quite receptive enough,” he said.
The Senate will now begin the new legislative session with a Democratic majority of 53 members and a minority of 47 Republican lawmakers.
