Elizabeth Smart Abductor Planned Kidnapping for Months
November 9, 2010
(ChattahBox U.S. News) — When Elizabeth Smart’s mother gave a panhandling Brian David Mitchell $5.00 in 2001, it was the beginning of an ordeal that would make the 14-year-old feel like she “had a burden the size of a mountain to carry around” for the rest of her life, she told a courtroom yesterday during the trial of her captor, CNN reports.
Mitchell told Smart that he decided from the moment he first saw her that she must join him and his wife Wanda Barzee in a “celestial” plural marriage, Smart testified. After the Smarts hired Mitchell to do some odd jobs around their house, he spent months developing his scheme to capture Smart, and abducted her at knifepoint from her bedroom on June 2, 2002, then led her in the dark to a crude campsite after a three to five hour hike, CNN reports. There, he raped her, sealing her into marriage as his wife.
Smart stayed with Mitchell and Barzee as their captor for nine months, after which she was rescued and returned to her family. Barzee has pleaded guilty, while Mitchell is on trial for kidnapping and moving a minor past state lines for sex. He claims he was insane during the abduction and has been loudly singing hymns in the courtroom each day, causing him to be ejected, CNN notes.
