KKK National Review Columnist: Health Care ‘Obama’s Tar Baby’
November 9, 2010
ChattahBox Political News)—National Review columnist Mona Charen, a former speechwriter for Nancy Reagan, harbors a malevolent hatred of President Obama that knows no bounds. But today’s column jumps the shark and lands right smack into racial animus. And she knows exactly what she is doing. Charen asks if Obama is politically trapped by his passage of healthcare reform, calling the overhaul of our failing healthcare system “Obama’s tar baby.” That’s right, the right-wing syndicated columnist used a racially charged term to refer to historic legislation championed by our first black President.
“Obamacare is deeply unpopular. But the president (unlike the country, we must hope) is stuck with it. The measure that was supposed to be the Democrats’ bid for greatness has become Obama’s tar baby. He must defend it or risk discrediting his presidency. And yet his resistance to repeal will hurt his bid for reelection,” writes Charen.
She goes on to describe the Affordable Care Act as “gluttonous.”
“The president has not yet devised an explanation of his gluttonous, heavy-handed, government-aggrandizing agenda that passes the laugh test.”
The term tar baby first became popular in the Uncle Remus stories from the 1800s, which were brought to the big screen in Walt Disney’s movie “Song of the South” that has been criticized for its derogatory racial stereotypes.
The term now, is commonly recognized as a racial epithet. Time Magazine pointed out that “The Oxford English Dictionary (but not the print version of its American counterpart) says that tar baby is a derogatory term used for “a black or a Maori.”‘
Various politicians have used the term, only to come under criticism for racial insensitivity. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, and the late Bush White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, have all boneheadedly used the term to describe a sticky situation.
But Mona Charen went further, attacking President Obama’s landmark healthcare reform with a racial slur.
In previous columns, Charen has attacked Obama, as vain, as someone having “an unsophisticated, one might even say simple-minded, view of the world,” as having “delusions of expertise” and as “deeply marinated in leftism.”
But this time, her unhinged hatred of our President has led Charen straight into Klan territory. And she should be ashamed.
