Teen Who Alleged Rape Hangs Herself, Leading to Dropped Charges for Accused

(ChattahBox U.S. News) — A 14-year-old high school freshman who had accused a senior of raping her died on Monday after hanging herself at home, following weeks of taunting from classmates who knew about the rape charge, the Huffington Post reports. Prosecutors in the case subsequently dropped rape charges against the 18-year-old accused, noting that they no longer felt they had a case.
The girl, Samantha Kelly, had sex with Joseph Tarnopolski in September, which he described as a “mutual thing,” after which her mother filed a sexual assault report that resulted in a statutory rape case being brought against Tarnopolski. Kelly’s mother initially told school authorities that she wanted to keep the case confidential, but after she learned that her daughter was being taunted about the situation, the mother went on the local Detroit news to criticize school administrators for not better protecting her daughter, Huffington Post notes.
Tarnopolski insists that he considered Kelly a friend and that any ridicule she may have faced was brought by others. Kelly’s mother was incensed after charges were dropped against Tarnopolski, saying she was not expecting the court to drop the case and that her daughter was unable to get justice.
