Phoenix Islamophobes in Uproar Over Muslim-Looking Church

November 15, 2010

(ChattahBox US News)—The conservative state of Arizona, already ginned up with anti-immigration bigotry, is joining the growing wave of Islamophobia in our country. But in this case, the residents of Phoenix have worked themselves into a bigoted lather over the building of what they wrongly believe to be a Muslim Mosque. In reality, it’s a modern Christian church with a dome. The nativist Arizonans, perhaps bored with hating “anchor babies” and “illegals” caused such a fuss over the scary Muslim-looking domed church, that church officials were forced to finally hang a giant sign, saying they are not Muslims.

KPHO.com has the report on the Phoenix area Muslim hysteria.

“A new dome-like structure near 19th Avenue along Interstate 10 in Phoenix is the Light of the World church, a nondenominational Christian church hoping to modernize traditional worship services, a church spokesman said.”

“Since the distinctive dome shape went up, church leaders said they have received phone calls from concerned neighbors who’ve mistaken the building for an Islamic mosque.”

The banner on the Light of the World Church reads, “If You Think Different You Are Wrong. We are Building a Christian House of Prayer.”
