Murkowski Celebrates ‘Miracle’ Win, But Miller Not Conceding
November 18, 2010
(ChattahBox Political News)—With a lead of 10,000 votes and the AP calling the election for Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), the improbable write-in candidate hightailed it to Alaska to celebrate her historic victory over radical teapartier and Sarah Palin favorite Joe Miller. “I think we can say our miracle is here,” gushed Murkowski last night to a roomful of supporters. Miller, not yet ready to concede defeat, is demanding a “review” of the voting process he calls “suspect.” But you can all but stick a fork in Miller, he’s cooked and it’s only a matter of time before he is forced to face reality and concede the election to Murkowski.
Miller’s campaign, after defeating Murkowski in the Republican primary, was marked by self-inflicted missteps. And his extremism, state’s rights hypocrisy and questionable ethics drove voters to Murkowski’s write-in campaign.
Last night Murkowski celebrated her historical win. A write-in candidate has not won a senatorial election, since Strom Thurmond’s victory in 1954.
“Murkowski returned to Anchorage from Washington, D.C., on Wednesday. A throng of supporters ringed the concrete walls of the local laborers union hall for a 6 p.m. rally. Some stood on benches or chairs.”
“A spokesman for the campaign chanted as Murkowski took the stage. “We made history! We made history!”
“Yes, we can!” said a man in the crowd.
“We did, we did,” Murkowski said softly. “We made history, and doesn’t it just feel … wow.
“Still a little bit, uh, a little bit mind-boggling.”
Meanwhile, the Alaska GOP has demanded that Miller accept the results and stand down.
Sorry Joe, but your gushing “measuring the drapes” tweets bragging about nailing your “name plaque” on Murkowski’s office door and picking out some new office furniture, will not come to pass.
