Somali-American Teen Thwarted in Oregon Car Bomb Plot
November 27, 2010
(ChattahBox US News)—Thanks to the efforts of a team of FBI agents, a Somali-American college student in Oregon was thwarted in his efforts to ignite a car bomb during a crowded Portland tree lighting ceremony. Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, a naturalized U.S. citizen attending Oregon State University, had been fantasizing about killing Americans since he was 15. Once he reached out last August to a suspected terrorist in Pakistan, expressing his intention to participate in “violent jihad,” Mohamud was put under surveillance and an undercover FBI agent later contacted Mohamud posing as an associate of the Pakistani. And the agent provided the teen jihadist with fake bomb materials. Mohamud was arrested for attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, after he tried to ignite the inert explosives loaded in a van parked near Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square, packed with families and young children.
Arthur Balizan, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Oregon, assured Portland residents that they were never in danger from the fake bomb materials, but nevertheless warned that the threat posed by Mohamud and other would-be home-grown terrorists is very real, as shown by the thwarted Times Square bomber.
“The threat was very real. Our investigation shows that Mohamud was absolutely committed to carrying out an attack on a very grand scale,” said Arthur Balizan, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Oregon. “At the same time, I want to reassure the people of this community that, at every turn, we denied him the ability to actually carry out the attack.”
Mohamud told the undercover FBI agent he wanted to become “operational” by carrying out an attack against Americans. And after a “test” ignition of a bomb in a remote area, he said “I want whoever is attending that event to leave, to leave either dead or injured,” according to the FBI affidavit.
And in a chilling passage of the affidavit, Mohamud told the undercover FBI agent that he intended to strike a mass holiday event, in which lots of children are present.
“You know there’s going to be a lot of children there?” an FBI operative asked Mohamud. “You know there are gonna be a lot of children there?”
Mohamud allegedly responded he was looking for a “huge mass that will … be attacked in their own element with their families celebrating the holidays.”
Mohamud dismissed concerns about law enforcement, explaining that, ” … It’s in Oregon; and Oregon, like, you know, nobody ever thinks about,” according to the affidavit.
Mohamud is scheduled to appear in federal court on Monday. He is facing a life sentence.
