Republican Senators Circulate Petition Vowing to Block Almost All Democrat-Backed Legislation

December 1, 2010

(ChattahBox U.S. News)—Senate Republicans don’t intend to play nice during the post-election Congressional session, as demonstrated by news that their leadership began collecting signatures on a letter that pledges to block action on nearly all Democrat-backed bills not related to tax cuts or federal spending, the Huffington Post reports.

It was unclear how many of the Senate’s current 42 Republicans had signed the letter, which could be the death knell for a bill that would end the discharge of openly gay military members and another that would offer legal status to young illegal immigrants who enter college or the military, Huffington Post notes. Democrats hope to get both bills through the Senate before the new Congress convenes next month, when Republicans will take over control of the House and will gain additional seats in the Senate.

Republican lawmakers have said that they intend to focus on economic issues, based on feedback from voters last month, Huffington Post reports.
