Republican Proposes Amending Constitution in Possible Effort to Block Health Reform
December 2, 2010
(ChattahBox U.S. News)—Rep. Rob Bishop (R-UT) introduced a proposed amendment to the Constitution yesterday that would give states the right to veto federal legislation, rawstory.com reports. Supporters of the amendment hope to use it to oppose health care overhaul and other federal laws.
Under Bishop’s proposal, if two-thirds of the U.S. states agreed to repeal any particular federal legislation, the “Repeal Amendment” would allow them to do so. Bishop said that the amendment is “not necessarily about health care, but you can see why we’re talking about it,” rawstory.com notes. Analysts believe that getting the amendment passed will be an uphill battle for Bishop.
Meanwhile, in other Constitutional news, saying that the 14th Amendment “has been misconstrued,” Rep. Steve King (R-IA) plans to introduce a bill to deny birthright citizenship to children who are born in the U.S. if their parents are illegal immigrants, rawstory.com reports.
