Gingrich: Jobless Benefits ‘Money for Doing Nothing’
December 5, 2010
(ChattahBox Political News)—Disgraced former Speaker Newt Gingrich is out doing his part to demonize the unemployed again. According to the well fed Newt, the unemployed are lazy bums who sit around “doing nothing” while living high off the hog on unemployment insurance. His solution? Make the unemployed labor in some sort of work camps.
Gingrich made his remarks during an appearance on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace. When asked if he thought that unemployment benefits should be extended, Gingrich said only for a short time.
Gingrich added that he proposes “we change the entire [unemployment benefits] program into a worker training program and not give anybody money for doing nothing.”
The unemployment rate is nearly 10 percent. There are five applicants for every one job. There is real suffering out there. But Newt wants to cut off unemployment checks, while the wealthy get a tax cut bonus.
When asked how long the tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans should last, Gingrich offered up quite the bizarre little plan. He proposes just asking the hedge fund managers and wealthy socialites like Paris Hilton how long they would like to continue keeping more of their money.
This kind of free market heartlessness is nothing new for Gingrich. Last spring he made similar comments about the unemployed.
“Legislators need to “rethink” unemployment compensation, he said, to make people work in some capacity, even community service, so they aren’t “given money for doing nothing.” “You are not getting money to go deer hunting and fishing,” said Gingrich.
