Anti-Gay Baptist Hate Group to Protest at Elizabeth Edwards’ Funeral
December 9, 2010
(ChattahBox US News)– An odious homophobic hate group masquerading as a Baptist church is planning to picket the funeral of the recently deceased Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former Democratic Vice Presidential nominee John Edwards. The Westboro Baptist Church known for its anti-gay protests at the funerals of our fallen soldiers, announced on its website, God Hates Fags, that the deranged group led by Fred Phelps is targeting Elizabeth Edwards, because of the content in her books and her attempts to “control God.”
Talking Points Memo reports on the bizarre statement released by the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church:
‘”They coveted things that were not theirs – and presumptuously thought they could control God,” the Westboro Baptists said in a news release. The church also said Edwards “meddled in matters of the womb,” an apparent reference to fertility treatments she reportedly received to conceive her two youngest children. The WBC also apparently took issue with Elizabeth Edwards’ books and her struggles with her own faith after the death of her 16-year-old son, Wade, and her own cancer diagnosis.”
Since it was learned that Fred Phelps’ group of haters planned to interfere with Elizabeth Edwards’ services, a Facebook page has cropped up, called “Protect Elizabeth Edwards’ funeral from Westboro clan.”
The Facebook page was created by North Carolina resident Ben Requena. He’s organizing a counter demonstration of a “human buffer between Elizabeth Edwards and the Westboro church.”
Requena is asking the media to not provide coverage of the Westboro protesters.
“We respectfully request that the media keep cameras and microphones off of the WBC group and report on the funeral and the outpouring of the community’s support,” writes Requena on the Facebook page.
The Westboro protesters crave media attention. Last year the group picketed outide of the school attended by President Obama’s daughters, holding anti-Obama and anti-gay signs
