December 11, 2010

(ChattahBox US News) – The older son of disgraced Ponzi schemer  Bernard Madoff was found dead Saturday in his New York apartment in an an apparent suicide.  Mark Madoff, 46, was found inside his Mercer St. home by his father-in-law around 7:30 a.m.  who called 911, telling dispatchers that Mark  was hanging from a dog leash, according to NYDailyNews sources.  His two-year-old son was asleep in another room, sources said. The apparent suicide came on the two-year anniversary of Bernie Madoff’s arrest, after his sons went to authorities.  The two sons had senior positions in the business but insisted that they had no knowledge of the fraud for which their father is now serving 150 years in prison, and had not been charged criminally.  However, The Wall Street Journal reported this month that they are the subject of criminal tax-fraud cases by federal prosecutors in Manhattan. And they are defendants in numerous civil suits, and recently the trustee recovering assets for Madoff’s investors sued the brothers saying their parents had transferred funds to them.

Just prior to his apparent suicide, Mark had reportedly exchanged emails with his wife, Stephanie, who is in Florida with their 4 year old son, sources said. She became worried and called her father to check on her husband.
