Political Stuntman Sen. DeMint: ‘Sacrilegious’ to Work BEFORE Christmas

December 15, 2010

(ChattahBox Political News)—The Republican Caucus has turned our deliberative upper chamber into the Theater of the Absurd, or a Kabuki play on acid, or better yet, a three-ring circus for the insane. As Republicans are running out of delaying tactics in the lame-duck session, they are having attacks of the vapors because they are expected to work and vote on bills and stuff, BEFORE and maybe AFTER Christmas. Oh noes! Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) complained that Sen. Harry Reid was “disrespecting” Christians by expecting lawmakers to return to work the week after Christmas.

Now, the far right-wing tea party lawmaker Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) is saying that forcing Senators to do their jobs the week before Christmas is “sacrilegious.” When that phony complaint fell on deaf ears, DeMint decided to pull the stunt to beat all stunts, by demanding that the entire contents of the START treaty, as well as the 1,924 page omnibus spending bill be read aloud into the record, to further delay and stall the work of the Senate. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs slammed DeMint’s craven stunt as a “new low in putting political stunts ahead of our national security.”

After a day of negative media coverage and criticism from the White House and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, DeMint backed down and the START treaty passed a procedural motion to proceed to the floor for debate. But not before heaps of phony outrage from Kyl and DeMint.

“Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) called Democrats’ push to force through an arms control treaty and an omnibus spending bill right before Christmas “sacrilegious,” and warned he’d draw the process out to wage his objections.”

“You can’t jam a major arms control treaty right before Christmas,” he told POLITICO. “What’s going on here is just wrong. This is the most sacred holiday for Christians. They did the same thing last year – they kept everybody here until (Christmas Eve) to force something down everybody’s throat. I think Americans are sick of this,” said DeMint.

As Gibbs pointed out, nothing is being “jammed” through here. The START treaty has been held up for eight-months and has undergone hours and hours of committee hearings.

“While some express concern that the Senate doesn’t have time to debate the Treaty, Senator DeMint wants to waste 12 hours to read the text of a treaty that has been available to every member of the Senate and the public for more than eight months.”

Have I mentioned lately, our Senate is broken? The Republicans have been obstructing, delaying and stalling the work of the Senate for two-years, and just like last year at this time, when they are pushed against the wall to get something done before the Christmas break, they complain that the Democrats are trying to “jam” legislation down their throats.

You know what’s really disrespectful and sacrilegious? At a time when our country faces deep problems, Senate Republicans are refusing to do the work that they were elected to do, and instead are acting like schoolchildren.

Never let it be said that Jim DeMint was willing to do the job that the people of South Carolina are paying him to do. He’s a lazy, craven politician, and nothing useful at all.
