Birther Doc Gets Six Months in Slammer, Booted From Army
December 16, 2010
(ChattahBox US News)–Faced with the prospect of real prison time, the so-called Army birther doc, Lt. Col. Terry Lakin pleaded for mercy during his court martial today, before he was sentenced to six-months in military prison and kicked out of the service. Lakin, a decorated 18-year Army surgeon, told the jury he made a mistake, while he tearfully lamented the prospect of his military career ending in disgrace. His attorney tried to portray Lakin as a confused man who was unduly influenced and pressured by his birther supporters, and given bad advice by his birther attorney. But despite his tears and remorse for refusing to obey orders to deploy to Afghanistan, Lakin says he still believes President Obama is not a natural born citizen.
Stars and Stripes reports that Lakin told the jury that if he had a do-over he would hop on a plane for Afghanistan the next day.
“I don’t want [my career] to end this way,” a tearful Lakin said to military jurors during the sentencing phase of his trial Wednesday afternoon. “I want to continue to serve … It crushed me not to be on deployment. I can be on a plane tomorrow. I’d truly do that.”
He tried to explain his attack on the first black President of the United States, as an illegal alien, by saying he thought he was being a patriot.
“I thought this was such an important question that I had to get an answer,” he said. “I thought I was upholding the Army values by questioning this … but I was wrong,” said Lakin.
His crocodile tears may have convinced some members on the jury, except for the fact that Lakin made a YouTube video, declaring that he would welcome a court martial rather than submit to the “illegal orders” of President Obama.
“I have no choice, but the distasteful one, of inviting my own court martial. For the first times in all my years of service to our great nation and at great peril to my career and future, I am choosing to disobey of what I believe are illegal orders, including an order to deploy to Afghanistan for my second tour of duty,” said Lakin in his YouTube birther video.
The prosecution played the video for the jury. After the video was shown, Lakin said it was a mistake to make it, again blaming the cabal of fringe birther conspiracy theorists who took up his cause.
“I would not do this again,” he said. “It was a confusing time for me, and I was very emotional. I thought I was choosing the right path, and I did not.”
The military prosecutors were not persuaded, saying Lakin “invited and earned” the sentence.
As a consequence of disobeying orders, and participating in his high-profile stunt and birther freak show, Lakin will also lose his military benefits.
For the record once more, President Obama was born in Hawaii, his birth notice appeared in two local newspapers and he has placed a copy of his birth certificate online. But that’s still not enough to satisfy the crazed conspiratorial birthers who are driven by xenophobia and racism.
Let’s take another look at Lakin’s bizarre birther video:
