McConnell Vows to Make Next Two-Years Hell for Obama
December 21, 2010
(ChattahBox Political News)— Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), a vile classless political hack of all hacks, at least is up front about his motives and priorities. He would sell out his own mother to regain the majority in the Senate and to destroy the Obama presidency to put a Republican back in the Oval Office. So, it should come as no surprise that he unleashed a slew of fresh threats aimed at President Obama and the Democrats during a Politico interview. And that he relishes his role as a bomb-throwing partisan obstructionist. McConnell gloated to Politico that if Democrats think the GOP’s scorched earth policy is bad, “wait ‘til next year.”
“Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has a warning for Democrats seething over his shrewd political tactics: Get used to it. “There’s much for them to be angst-ridden about,” McConnell said with a chuckle. “If they think it’s bad now, wait ‘til next year.”’
McConnell went on to describe his definition of compromise, either do exactly what the Republicans want, or else.
“If the president is willing to do things that we believe in, I don’t think we’re going to say, ‘No, Mr. President we’re not going to do this any longer because you’re now with us,’” McConnell told POLITICO in his ornate office across from the old Senate chamber. “Any time the president is willing to do what we think is in the best interest of the American people, we have something to talk about.”
This kind of rhetoric is nothing new. Days after the Republicans made massive gains in the House, McConnell delivered two incendiary speeches, taunting President Obama, in which he said unless the Democrats “move in our direction,” the relentless obstructionism in the Senate will continue. “We will stop the Liberal onslaught,” no matter what it takes declared McConnell. And he compared health reform to tyranny.
His latest gloating and threats stem from his success in killing the omnibus spending bill, because of millions of dollars in earmarks that McConnell and other Republicans requested. His opposition to the spending bill was the height of hypocrisy, but he managed to convince enough Republican lawmakers to back off from it.
The Politico quotes Democratic Senators who watched in disgust as McConnell’s hypocritical Kabuki play unfolded.
“It was really rich for Mitch McConnell to say that somehow that this was a Democratic plot that had been somehow hatched in a backroom, and they were standing up to stop it,” Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) said. “It really just was that a bunch of them thought they could have it both ways, and at the 11th hour, they thought that they couldn’t.”
Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) expressed bitterness over being thrown “under the bus” after months of negotiations with Republicans to cap the spending bill at the exact number requested by McConnell, before he decided to trash it.
“Asked what her impressions of the Republican leaders were, Mikulski said: “I don’t know them anymore. … I’m really frustrated with this kind of temper tantrum politics that we have going on here.”’
This is indeed a bitter lesson for Senate Democrats, one they keep having to relearn, apparently. McConnell and his gang of obstructionist vandals do not deal in good faith. They don’t plan to deal in good faith in the future and they haven’t acted in good faith since President Obama was elected.
And they will continue to engage in “temper tantrum politics, as long as it works.”
