Yemen-Based al-Qaeda Group Mulled Poisoning U.S. Food

December 22, 2010

(ChattahBox U.S. News)—Just a few months ago, an al-Qaeda group in Yemen attempted to place bombs on U.S.-bound cargo planes, but the plans were thwarted when authorities discovered the bombs. Now the American government has received a “credible” threat that the same group considered putting poison in food served at U.S. hotels and restaurants, AFP reports.

The group was planning to use the fatal chemicals ricin and cyanide in food supplies, but it’s unclear which hotels and restaurants, if any, were targeted. The Dept. of Homeland Security noted that the threat was similar to those posted in online jihadist publications, as part of a host of ways that the group could harm Americans, AFP notes.

The threat occurred several months ago, and authorities met with hotel and restaurant industry representatives to discuss ways to ensure food safety, CNN reported.
