Giffords in Critical Condition As Details Emerge About Obsessed Gunman
January 10, 2011
(ChattahBox U.S. News)—Jared Lee Loughner, the accused gunman in the attack on U.S. Rep Gabrielle Giffords which left 19 wounded and six dead, had been obsessed with Giffords ever since he met her at a 2007 event, the Wall Street Journal reports. Loughner, who had been interested in the origin of language, was aggravated after he asked Loughner about the meaning of words in 2007 and she responded in Spanish and moved on with her meeting.
Giffords was shot in the left side of the head during the Saturday attack and is “fighting for her life,” the Washington Post reports. However, news that she was able to respond to commands is promising as Giffords enters a critical period where it’s still impossible to determine her prognosis.
Loughner is a 22-year-old high school dropout who attended community college but left after being asked to take a mental health evaluation following outbursts in class, the WSJ noted. He had tried to join the Army but was rejected due to a failed drug test.
