Giffords’ Doctor Says Rep. ‘Will Not Die’ From Gunshot Injury
January 12, 2011
(ChattahBox U.S. News)—Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is not only able to breathe on her own, but has now been given a “101 percent” chance of survival by her physician, who said Tuesday that Giffords “will not die,” the Kansas City Star reports. Dr. Peter Rhee offered the assessment yesterday about the Congress member, who remains in critical condition after being shot in the head at a constituent meeting on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the family of alleged gunman Jared Loughner released a statement indicating that they don’t understand why the tragedy happened, but that they are “deeply sorry” about Saturday’s events, the Star notes. Six of the shooting victims still remain hospitalized, including Giffords.
The Westboro Baptist Church had announced plans to picket the Thursday funeral of nine-year-old shooting victim Christina Taylor Green, who died during the rampage, but the Arizona Legislature passed an emergency law stating that protesters must stay at least 300 feet from a funeral, the Star reports. The law was quickly sent to Arizona Governor Jan Brewer for her signature.
