Pawlenty Panders to Bigots: Vows to Bring Back DADT
January 13, 2011
(ChattahBox Political News)—It’s official. Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty is throwing his hat into the presidential ring. How do I know? Because he shamelessly pandered to the homophobic hate of the Republican Party, by vowing to reinstate the military policy of “Don’t ask, don’t tell.” And he made his remarks during an appearance on the radio program of Bryan Fischer, one of the most virulently anti-gay members of the American Family Association, a group that was recently designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center for its relentless promotion of “demonizing propaganda aimed at homosexuals.”
Pawlenty told the wacky Fischer, AFA’s director of issues analysis, that he supports the Defense of Marriage Act and is opposed to same-sex marriage. And that he would support a return to the discriminatory policy of DADT, but of course he offered up no suggestions how he would accomplish such a thing.
FISCHER: One last question, got about forty five seconds left, put you on the hot seat one more time: we just saw the ban on homosexual service in the military repealed, overturned. Conservatives will be working over the next couple of years to see that that ban is reinstated. If you become president in 2012, will you work to reinstate the prohibition on open homosexual service in the military? Would you sign such a prohibition if it got to your desk?
PAWLENTY: Bryan, I have been a public and repeat supporter of maintaining Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. There’s a lot of reasons for that, but if you look at how the combat commanders and the combat units feel about it, the results of those kinds of surveys were different than the ones that were mostly reported in the newspaper and that is something I think we need to pay attention to. But I have been a public supporter of maintaining Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and I would support reinstating it as well.
Fischer is not your average homophobic fundamentalist Christian, he is a certifiable nut. He recently warned that President Obama planned to give back Manhattan to the Indians, and he penned a bizarre screed suggesting that man-eating Grizzly bears are a sign of an evil “curse.”
But when you get beyond the right-wing Christian kookiness, Fischer spews out a steady stream of hate and invective towards gays and Muslims that Pawlenty is now tied to. For example, Fischer believes gay sex is akin to domestic terrorism, and he called for Muslims to be deported from the United States and banned from serving in the military.
