Now Able to Stand, Giffords Preps for Transfer to Rehab
January 20, 2011
(ChattahBox U.S. News)—Injured Congress member Gabrielle Giffords stood up and looked out a window yesterday in her latest accomplishment since the Jan. 8 shooting that left six people dead and 12 injured, Fox News reports. Hospital staff members in Arizona are preparing her for a transfer to Houston, where she will begin the rehabilitation phase of her recovery.
Giffords’ husband Mark Kelly, an astronaut who lives and works in Houston, expects medical staff to move her to the rehab facility by Friday, which will most likely happen with the assistance of a Medevac jet, Fox News notes. Recent research shows that the sooner a patient begins rehabilitation, the better their recovery.
Meanwhile, a grand jury indicted suspect Jared Loughner in the shooting, accusing him of attempting to assassinate Giffords and two of her aides. Additional murder charges against Loughner for the deaths of Gabe Zimmerman and Judge John Roll have not yet been filed because they are potential death penalty charges and require additional processes, but it is likely that prosecutors will file those charges later, Fox News notes.
