Former SC Governor Sanford Vacations With Argentine Mistress
January 27, 2011
(ChattahBox U.S. News)—Former S.C. Governor Mark Sanford appears to have fulfilled a previous pledge to restart a relationship with his Argentine mistress, with new reports indicating that Sanford and Maria Belen Chapur recently spent a week together at a resort in Uruguay, the Huffington Post reports. Paparazzi photos published in the Argentine magazine Caras last week showed the couple on the beach and in the resort’s restaurant together.
Sanford’s affair became national news in 2009 after he disappeared from S.C. for five days, telling his gubernatorial staff that he would be hiking the Appalachian Trail. Upon his return, he announced that he had cheated on his wife Jenny while visiting his mistress in Argentina. Sanford and his wife subsequently divorced, and his term as governor ended on Jan. 12, Huffington Post notes.
Sanford first met Chapur in Uruguay but initially the two were only friends. However, their relationship developed into romance in 2008 and the two maintained the affair throughout the end of his term as governor. They reportedly arrived at the Uruguay resort on Jan. 17 and stayed for six days, Huffington Post notes.
