House Dems Join GOPers to Defund Obama’s ‘Czars’
February 18, 2011
(ChattahBox Political News)—With Democrats like these— The House Republicans are continuing with their reckless, stunt budget cut amendments throughout the weekend. No surprise here. Another day, another radical right-wing measure to roll back our nation to the 19th century. But what did come as a surprise, is the number of Democratic lawmakers whom willingly joined Republicans to stick it to President Obama, by voting to defund White House advisers not confirmed by the Senate, the media and Republicans dub “czars.” The ridiculous amendment sponsored by Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), not only defunds the salaries and expenses of current White House advisers, but would also require senate confirmation of the President’s policy advisers. With senate confirmation at an all time low in the dysfunctional body, it would make it nearly impossible for President Obama to hire the staff he needs to run the government. And that of course, is the point. But why would 13 members of the President’s own Party vote for such partisan nonsense?
The usual Blue Dog suspects Reps. Mike Ross (D-AR), and Heath Shuler (D-NC) voted for the defund Obama’s czars amendment, but Rep. Pete DeFazio (D-OR) and a couple of other Dems came as a surprise.
The rest of the Democrats voting with the GOP to defund Obama’s czars were, Reps. Dan Boren (D-OK), Ben Chandler (D-KY), Jerry Costello (D-IL), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Gene Green (D-TX), Larry Kissell (D-NC), Jim Matheson (D-UT), Mike McIntyre (D-NC), Ed Pastor (D-AZ) and Nick Rahall (D-WV).
Scalise writes on his official website, “Hardworking American families should not be forced to pay millions of dollars to fund these czars who are implementing radical policies under the cloak of darkness rather than going through the open and transparent process that we were promised. The government should not be running car companies, we should not be regulating the Internet, and we should not have all these czars!”
And 13 Democrats, that’s right 13, voted in favor of this tea party conspiratorial nonsense.
The confused global warming denier Scalise, once equated energy efficiency standards to a “global warming Gestapo.” And while railing against the “unbridled powers” of President Obama’s so-called czars, in the same breath, he attacked Obama for not instituting a government takeover in the aftermath of the BP oil spill.
