Question About Shooting Obama Draws Big GOP Laughs

February 25, 2011

(ChattahBox Political News)– Hey, you know what Republican folks from Georgia get a big kick out of? Cracking wise about assassinating President Barack Obama, our first black president, who right-wingers are convinced is a secret Muslim, illegal alien Kenyan usurper, bent on destroying America. During a town hall held by Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA), a lawmaker so consumed with insane conspiracy theories and right-wing paranoia, that even the parody site, The Onion, can’t compete with his craziness, an attendee asked Broun the number one question on everyone’s minds in Georgia, apparently. “Who was going to shoot President Barack Obama?” Jesus, Broun must have immediately condemned such incendiary crazy talk about presidential assassination, and alerted the Secret Service, right? Not in the least.

After the unidentified questioner inquired about shooting Obama, the crowd erupted into laughter. Broun responded by acknowledging that he sympathizes with their murderous hatred of President Obama.

“The thing is, I know there’s a lot of frustration with this president. We’re going to have an election next year. Hopefully, we’ll elect somebody that’s going to be a conservative, limited-government president that will take a smaller, who will sign a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare.” […]

“Broun’s press secretary, Jessica Morris, confirmed that the question was indeed, who is going to shoot Obama? “Obviously, the question was inappropriate, so Congressman Broun moved on,” she said.”

You would think that in light of the shooting rampage in Tucson that left Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-AZ) with a hole in her head, such dangerous and incendiary rhetoric would be immediately condemned, especially by a U.S. Congressman. But Broun is no ordinary elected official. In a word, he is completely deranged. And Broun has plenty of company in the GOP.

Broun last made headlines, when he refused to attend President Obama’s State of the Union address. What did he do instead? The extremist lawmaker sat in his office and heckled Obama during his address via Twitter. “Mr. President, You don’t believe in the Constitution. You believe in socialism,” tweeted Broun.

His twitter heckling is just the tip of his radical iceberg. As Chattahbox previously reported:

“The wacky Southerner once compared health care reform to “Yankee aggression,” he fearmongered that then President-elect Barack Obama having a “philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism,” planned to create a Gestapo-like security force to establish a dictatorship “exactly” like “Hitler did in Nazi Germany” and he warned that the “socialistic elite” of Obama, Pelosi and Reid could use the swine flu epidemic “as an excuse to declare martial law.”

When right-wing extremism reaches the point of publicly laughing and joking about a presidential assassination, and a U.S. Congressman doesn’t even blink an eye in response, the Republican Party has reached the point of no return.

(Update: After being barraged with media criticism, Broun released a statement calling the question about shooting President Obama “abhorrent,” claiming he was “stunned” by the question.

But a reporter on the scene and a witness both say that Broun laughed along with the crowd. Town Hall attendee and newspaper commenter, Mark Farmer said he was shocked at Broun’s response to a question about assassinating Obama.

“I was gravely disappointed in the response of a U.S. Congressman who also laughed and then made no effort to correct the questioner on what constitutes proper behavior or to in any way distance himself from such hate filled language,” Farmer wrote.
