GOP’s Radical Plan to Destroy Medicare and Help Rich Get Richer
April 5, 2011
(ChattahBox Political News)— Hold on tight to your Medicare and Medicaid benefits people, because the Republicans want to take them away and hand over the savings to the wealthiest one percent. After that, they will be coming after Social Security, until the 20th century New Deal reforms are wiped out, and America regresses to the Gilded Age of the 19th century; a veritable wet dream for wild-eyed Ayn Rand acolytes, such as House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, (R-WI). Which brings us to Ryan’s much-hyped roll out of his radical 2012 budget plan based on his deeply flawed and frighteningly extremist “Roadmap for America.” Ryan’s budget calls for $6.2 trillion in spending cuts over 10-years, and the complete destruction of Medicare and replacing it with a privatized voucher system that will over time, return our seniors to a life of poverty. Medicaid would be gutted and turned into a block grant. Sorry disabled poor people and families having chronically ill children, you are on your own. The Affordable Care Act would also be destroyed, leaving millions of Americans without access to quality affordable health care. The defense budget would be largely untouched, corporate welfare, such as oil subsidies would remain intact. And taxes would be cut for corporations and the wealthy, while the tax burden on the poor and middle class would rise. And of course, Ryan rejects the very notion of raising government revenue. This insanity is dubbed “The Path to Prosperity.” Prosperity for whom? Corporations and the wealthiest one percent, that’s who.
All of the very serious conservative talking heads are out today praising Ryan’s extreme budget proposal, hailing it as “courageous” and a bold plan to “save” and “reform” entitlements. This nonsense could not be further from the truth. Ryan plans to destroy Medicare, completely. His plan calls for the gutting of Medicaid. Don’t fall for Ryan’s snake oil promises that he is “saving Medicare.”
Remember when the GOP fearmongered during the midterms, about ObamaCare’s nonexistent provisions to cut Medicare for seniors? The GOP Pledge To America, warned that “…the new law’s massive Medicare cuts will fall squarely on the backs of seniors, millions of whom will be forced off their current Medicare coverage.”
And Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) campaigned on the promise to “repeal these Medicare” cuts.”
Well, now that the rubes bought what the Republicans were selling, they pulled a complete 180 and they have their sights set firmly on dismantling Medicare, or in the parlance of GOP snake oil salesmen “saving” it.
The Political Animal’s Steve Benen calls Ryan’s plan “stark raving mad.”
‘”Courageous”? To the extent that a major political party and House majority is actually willing to rally behind such extremism — without a hint of shame or trepidation — I’ll gladly give Republicans credit for actually putting their ridiculous wish list on the table.”
“But in this context, real, meaningful courage requires sound judgment, not just a willingness to fight for millionaires and corporations, while screwing over the elderly, the poor, the disabled, and working families.”
How hard will President Obama and the Democrats fight against this insanity? If the Democrats treat Ryan’s budget, as anything but a radical attack on the American dream, then we are doomed as a society.
