Poll: Crackpot Birtherism Puts Trump on Top of GOP Field
April 15, 2011
(ChattahBox Political News)—Peddling crackpot racist birther conspiracies continues to pay big dividends for reality TV star Donald Trump, at least when it comes to polls of self-described Republican birther voters, that is. Otherwise, The Donald is still a vulgar fool. But for now, he is riding the birther wave all the way to the top of his fake presidential campaign. A new Public Policy Polling poll shows Trump leading the GOP presidential field. He now leads Mike Huckabee by 9 points.
What does this poll really mean? Who knows? It probably doesn’t have much significance for a presidential race that’s still a long way away, with no officially declared GOP candidates, as yet. Besides, it’s highly doubtful Trump is serious about a White House bid.
But this latest poll certainly shows that Republican primary voters are consumed with crank conspiracy theories that question the legitimacy of our first black president. And that doesn’t bode well for the more establishment candidates, such as Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty.
The PPP blog points out that Trump “is cleaning up” with the GOP voters clinging to birtherism. And there are a lot of them. The poll found that 62 percent of the Republicans polled hold pretty strong birther views. Only 38 percent said they would vote for a non-birther candidate.
“Only 38% of Republican primary voters say they’re willing to support a candidate for President next year who firmly rejects the birther theory and those folks want Mitt Romney to be their nominee for President next year. With the other 62% of Republicans- 23% of whom say they are only willing to vote for a birther and 39% of whom are not sure- Donald Trump is cleaning up.”
Overall, Huckabee, Romney and the rest are trailing far behind Trump at the moment.
“Trump’s broken the perpetual gridlock we’ve found at the top of the Republican field, getting 26% to 17% for Mike Huckabee, 15% for Romney, 11% for Newt Gingrich, 8% for Sarah Palin, 5% for Ron Paul, and 4% for Michele Bachmann and Tim Pawlenty.”
We sure live in a crazy world.
