CBS’ Bob Schieffer Speaks the Truth: Trump Peddles ‘Racism’ (Video)
April 28, 2011
(ChattahBox Political News)–It’s not often we hear the plain truth from our mainstream journalists in this age of “balanced” media, in which each side of an issue is given equal weight. But some issues, such as blatant racism, bigotry and hate can’t be given equal credence. There is no “other side.” But mealy-mouthed politicians and cable news channels chasing ratings, don’t make those distinctions. Not so with CBS’ Bob Schieffer. He called Donald Trump’s vile attacks on President Obama’s educational background, for what it is: ugly racism.
Schieffer made his remarks during an appearance on CBS’ Evening News with Katie Couric. She asked if the birther issue (also a product of ugly racism) was over, now that President Obama released a long-form birth certificate.
Schiefer responded that “reasonable people” would likely walk away from the birther conspiracy theory. But Schiefer said he was concerned with Trump’s second line of attack against our first black President, accusing Obama of not being smart enough to get into ivy league schools on his own merits.
“That’s just code for saying he got into law school because he’s black. This is an ugly strain of racism that’s running through this whole thing. We can hope that kind of comes to an end too, but we’ll have to see,” Schieffer said.
Trump raised the issue of President Obama’s college records, during a bizarre press conference in New Hampshire, soon after Obama released his long-form birth certificate. His odious race-baiting assertions were a new low point for the vulgar Trump.
“The word is, according to what I’ve have read, is that he was a terrible student when he went to Occidental. He then gets to Columbia and then gets to Harvard,” Trump told reporters. He added, “I heard at Columbia he was not a very good student, and then he then he gets into Harvard. How do you get into Harvard if you are not a good student? Maybe that’s right, maybe that’s wrong, but I don’t know why he doesn’t he release his records. Why doesn’t he release his Occidental records?”
Trump first made his accusations to the Associated Press. He complained that the white privileged children of his rich friends couldn’t get into Harvard, but this black guy, got in somehow.
Bob Schieffer has been around long enough to recognize blatant racism when he sees it.
(Update: Trump responded to Schieffer’s remarks, denying he’s a racist. Trump told the gossip site TMZ that he didn’t mean to suggest that our first black president, Barack Obama, was unable to get into Harvard on his own merits, without the aid of Affirmative Action, except that’s exactly what he meant. And he berated Schieffer for calling him on it.
Trump tells TMZ … “That is a terrible statement for a newscaster to make. I am the last person that such a thing should be said about.” [...]
“Affirmative action is out there. It’s a program that is available. But I have no idea whether it applies in this case. I’m not suggesting anything.”
At this point The Donald is way beyond “suggesting anything.” The racist dog whistles he let loose could be heard all the way to Mississippi.
