GOP Senator Cracks Sexist Jokes in Committee Hearing

(ChattahBox Political News)—Bush stalwart Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS), apparently thinks it’s appropriate to crack lame sexist jokes during a Senate Finance Committee hearing. The third-term Senator, during a hearing on reforming our tax code, quipped to a female economist that Ph.D. means “a pretty hot Democrat.” His office later tried to spin away Roberts’ bizarre behavior by claiming he used the word “hot” in the same way he uses “partisan.”OK, well, Roberts still comes off as everyone’s crazy uncle, cracking inappropriate jokes during thanksgiving dinner.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Roberts began his questioning by awarding each witness an “honorary doctorate of economics” from the University of Kansas.
Aviva Aron-Dine, already working on her doctorate told Roberts, “I particularly appreciate it since I like getting my Ph.D. a couple of years early.”
That’s when things got weird.
“I always heard a Ph.D. was a pretty hot Democrat,” Mr. Roberts replied.
“Pretty…sorry?” Ms. Aron-Dine responded.
‘“Somebody asked me what a pretty hot Republican was, and they said, `Nothing,’” Mr. Roberts continued. “So, you know, it’s an equal deal.” Then he went on with his questioning.”
Roberts, a staunch conservative, once famously argued that the work of the Senate Finance panel should be made public for 72-hours, before taking action on it, to accommodate health insurance lobbyists. That is, not to accommodate fellow lawmakers, or constituents, but lobbyists representing special interests.
